If you’re looking to buy a new motorcycle and are worried that from April 1st 2018, the same non-ABS model of yours will get an ABS then don’t worry because the rule to make it mandatory from 1 April 2018 is only for those motorcycles which are going to be launched after that date. It means that if you want to buy a new Royal Enfield Classic 350, then go ahead and buy it because it won’t get an ABS from April 1st. It will, however get an ABS eventually in the near future just not after 1st April.
According to the circular from the Government, all the bikes above 125 cc or with more than 14 BHP of power, which will be launched after the 1st of April are required to have an ABS system onboard. Even the quality of how the ABS should be is also mentioned in the circular.
For all those of you, who are looking to buy a new bike in the next year, then there is a good news for you. From 1st April 2019, every bike in the market above 125 cc or with more than 14 BHP must have an ABS system on board.
The news regarding the CBS (Combine Braking System) technology also becoming compulsory with the ABS is not true, in fact, there is nowhere mentioned in the Gazette that CBS must become mandatory for 2 wheelers of above-mentioned specifications. Besides CBS is a patented technology from of Honda and they will never allow it to get released for motorcycles of other brands and many people prefer normal braking systems over CBS for more manual control over their bikes.
The compulsion of ABS for new bikes will certainly result in an increase of around Rs 8000 in the price of every new bike which is scheduled to launch on or after 1st April 2018. By not including low powered motorcycles and scooters under this system government has taken a smart move. As an ABS system on a Hero Splendor will just make the bike more expensive for those people who already ride it at low speeds.
