Miller took advantage of the crashes ahead of him and overtook Marc Marquez for the lead, winning only his first race in the MotoGP class and the first ever satellite rider to win a Premier class race in a decade after Toni Elias win it in Portugal 2006.
The race was declared wet and thus the riders set off on Michelin’s Rain spec tires for the 26 lap showdown. The drying racing line made analysts think a flag-to flag scenario is inevitable (where riders will switch to a bike which is setup for the dry) and the pit lane was alive with roaring engines. But the weather played spoilsport, eliminating the need of switching bikes. The rain was so hard that Race Direction decided to red flag the session.
The first race was a dream for Aspar Ducati’s Yonny Hernandez as he grabbed the lead from Andrea Dovizioso and Valentino Rossi. He went on to build a 3.2 second lead at the front by taking advantage of the Desmosedici GP14.2’s exceptional characteristics in the wet. His quest for victory ended on lap 12 as he lost his front, ending any chances of a victory or a podium.
Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati team) was leading over the line on lap 14 ahead of Danilo Petrucci (Octo Pramac Yakhnich) and Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha), forming the front row of the restarted race. The two Honda RC213V boys shadowed the front row starters until Petrucci’s Desmosedici GP15 ground to a halt on lap 2, Andrea Dovizioso losing his front end at Ruskenhoek and Valentino Rossi joining him on the gravel trap on the next lap after losing his front.
Reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha) started the first race in tenth position but was unable to maintain the pace of the frontrunners. He was complaining about 'Lack of feel' from his Yamaha YZR-M1 and was languishing in an embarrassing 19th position before the red flag was thrown. Owing to 11 crashes and three riders remounting, Lorenzo eventually finished dead last (excluding the remounted riders) in 10th place.
Rossi’s crash and Lorenzo’s 10th place finish means that Marc Marquez will go to the German GP at the Sachsenring in two weeks’ time with a 42 point cushion on Valentine Rossi and a 24 point gap over Jorge Lorenzo.
