The Bones of a Beast- Jawa is now owned by Mahindra and they make Mahindra Mojo. That’s why the new Jawa engine shares some of its internal components with the famous Sports tourer from Mahindra. The bore and stroke of the new Jawa engine remain the same as the Mojo but the power and torque output is slightly different, by 1 or 2 Hp or Nm. Overall the power delivery of the bike will be linear paired with a flat torque curve. The valves are regulated by two camshafts hence allowing the engine to function smoothly and without any stress, especially in the higher RPM’s. The engine will be Fuel Injected for smooth running operations.
The Overall Aesthetic of the engine looks like an Air cooled one but underneath it is a hidden liquid cooled motor and a single cylinder. It will increase the retro feel of the bike but the heat dissipation can be an issue because other “Classic themed” bikes like the Triumph Bonneville also suffer from the same issue.
The performance of the bike will be similar to the Mahindra Mojo but way more refined because of a BS6 engine. Although it will deliver more fuel economy the impending decrease in power is also a reality of stricter emission norms.
The Competition- Even before the bike is launched, it is fated to compete with the Royal Enfield Classic 350. Although both bikes have a 300 cc engine their actual performance is way different. While the Royal Enfield finds itself in a commuter range, according to its performance. The upcoming Jawa with it’s 30 something HP will lie in the entry-level sports bike performance category.
While the Average cruising speed of Royal Enfield Classic 350 is 80-90 km/h, Jawa will easily be able to run all day at 120-130 km/h. Combine to this speed a liquid cooled DOHC and fuel injected setup, and Jawa becomes a Classic bike which might even eat into the shares of Continental GT 650.
The Danger- To sell a classic bike anywhere in the world you need history and a fanbase. With the discontinuation of the Jawa bikes more than 2 decades ago, the bikes gained a very niche cult status among hipsters and Fans of Classic Motorcycles. Royal Enfield had both of the above-mentioned points, as a result, it was able to cash in on that particular growing craze.
Now a bike is coming to the Indian market which is alive in people’s heart despite its absence and it’s got performance to top it all off. Royal Enfield has set the performance bar so low that even a slightly better engine can make the UCE bite the dust and now we have a fully modern engine which not only makes more power and torque but will definitely be way more refined and durable. As a result, the reign of Royal Enfield, it seems may come to an end.
