As the lights went off, Valentino Rossi got the holeshot into the first corner and disappeared at the front. Marc Marquez had a decent start as well and was closely followed by a pack including Viñales, Crutchlow, Dovizioso and Lorenzo. Valentino Rossi continued to lead the race with a comfortable gap of 7 to 8 tenths. The group behind slowly pulled away from Lorenzo, and swapped a few places. Meanwhile disaster struck Marc Marquez when he was behind Dovi, as he experienced an engine blow and was forced to retire.
With only a handful of laps remaining the lap times dropped to low 2'02's as the tyres started to wear. But Andrea Dovizioso held his nerves to attack at the end, as he came in prey of Valentino Rossi. The gap seemed to decrease and was seen visually, and with 3 laps to go Dovi made a clear pass on "The Doctor". Maverick Viñales wanted to take the gamble and attacked Rossi on the penultimate lap to take P2. In a matter of two laps, Rossi lost the lead and was seen at P3. Viñales tried catching Dovizioso on the last lap, but the Italian was in a league of his own and was untouchable. Dovi crossed the chequered flag first followed by Viñales, just 0.114 behind. Valentino Rossi finished the race at a contented P3. LCR Honda rider Cal Crutchlow lost his initial pace half way and finished 1.6 seconds behind the leader at P4 as the top satellite bike.

The MotoGP grid now moves to Valentino Rossi's home track in Misano, Italy in two weeks time. With just five more races to go for the Championship decider at Valencia, each and every race will be important here after and the riders will be looking to grab every possible point.
