Engine and Transmission:
The Avenger 220 Street is powered by a detuned 219.9 cc motor from Pulsar 220. The detuning is done to ease the stress on the engine in order to make it a long highway runner. The engine is the same 4-stroke 2-valve DTS-I engine. It is a tried and tested unit and performs well under every condition. It uses an air + oil cooler which is a boon in hot weather and also increases the life of engine oil. The motor can squeeze out a mileage figure of 40 km/l under normal driving conditions.
Chassis and Suspension: The motorcycle sits on a cradle frame which is sturdy enough. The weight of the bike is 150 kg which is 2 kg more than the last version. All the weight is managed by Telescopic suspension with anti-friction bush at the front and twin shock absorbers at the back. Both of them have been tuned to offer more comfort. The bike comes equipped with allow 17” and 15” alloy wheels for the front and the back. The front tyre size is 90/90 and for the rear tyre it is 130/90, both of them are tubeless. The wheelbase of the bike is increased to 1490 mm and the ground clearance is up by 169 mm.
Comfort and Design: The comfort level on Avenger 220 Street is high but not as high as the Cruise model. It has perforated seats just like its cousin but it gets a short handlebar which makes it more flickable in city traffic. There is no backrest in this model instead we get a pillion grab rail which is rubberised for maximum grip, it is sturdy enough to act as a support for heavy luggage as well.
The comfort boils down to your preference because if you prefer raised handlebars then the “220 Cruise” is for you but if you’re fine with the short handlebars then “Street” will serve you just fine. The design of the bike looks like Harley Davidson street 750, urban and modern. The mini windshield adds to the street nature of the bike and the overall paint scheme and short handlebar complement its versatility.
Electrical: Despite being AHO compliant, the bike gets a headlamp switch. It is due to the addition of LED DRL, which keeps the front light on while giving us the option to turn on/off the headlamp. It is a clever trick pulled out by Bajaj to conserve the battery life and it works impressively. The rear light also gets a halo effect treatment which looks great as well. The all-new digital instrument console also deserves a special mention because it unifies itself with the rest of the setup effortlessly. It is clear, crisp and lit in orange colour. Readouts include an odometer, trip meter, fuel gauge, speedometer, low battery indicator etc.
Price and Mileage:
The shortcomings of 220 Cruise haunts the “Street” as well. An obvious lack of rear disc robs the rider a lot of confidence while braking. Bajaj has given Pulsar 150 a disc brake but it is absent from a much powerful Avenger 220. An addition of ABS too is the requirement of modern times.
Avenger 220 street is a do it all motorcycle which blends modern styling and highway performance with everyday usability and good mileage. If you’re interested in buying a cruiser within Rs 1 lakh then it should be on your list. Its ex-showroom price is Rs 94,464.
